Riley County Police Department is reminding people to lock their doors after a rash of vehicle burglaries.
The most affected areas with this crime are communities in the northwest part of Manhattan.
Thieves are looking for things like purses, electronics, or just anything of value.
According to Riley County Law Enforcement, 80 percent of car thefts occurs to vehicles left unlocked.
With university classes about to start, Riley County Public Information Officer, Matthew Droge says they're doing everything they can but it's up to the public.
"Historically the Riley County area, Manhattan, we've always had to deal with vehicle burglaries, says Droge. However were seeing an increase in those burglaries in the last three years from 2012 to 2013. There's been an 8.9 percent increase, in instances of vehicle burglary. Essentially we've made it easier for the burglars, the cars are unlocked or windows are down."
Riley County PD says the very best thing anyone can do to keep their belongings safe is to simply lock their doors.
