A local foundation is stepping up to the plate to help fight childhood hunger.
The Harvesters Food Bank received a $7,500 check from the Westar Energy Foundation yesterday afternoon.
The money will go toward its "Back Snack" program that helps to provide backpacks of food to low income children during weekends.
Schools distribute the backpacks on Fridays and students bring them back on Monday.
This year, Harvesters has distributed more than 7,000 weekly backpacks to students in Topeka and Northeast Kansas.
