Earlier today, Topeka Police Officers began investigating a residential burglary in southeast Topeka.
Officers located a device that was determined to be an explosive. The TPD Bomb Squad was called back to secure the device.
Additionally the ATF has been notified.
UPDATE: Investigation continues with the assistance of the ATF. Cooperative investigations between federal agencies and the Topeka police department are common.
Three persons of interest were detained for questioning shortly after the initial officers arrived on scene. Their identifications will not be released at this time as the investigation is ongoing.
The device, which appears to be a small homemade device of simple design, has been removed from the residence and secured. The device has not been confirmed to be an active device. A full examination to make that determination is pending.
The address where the burglary occurred is 614 SE 34th street in Topeka. No one was home at the time of the burglary.
