It may be hot outside but a few brave souls embraced even more heat Tuesday night in Topeka.
The Fiesta Mexicana's 23rd annual jalapeno eating contest was held near Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
Contestants had to eat as many raw jalapenos as they could handle in 60 seconds.
There were three heats with ten participants each and a final round to determine the winner.
In order to be a winner, the contestant had to be able to keep the jalapenos down for at least 60 seconds after time was called.
The winner this year was Jack Anderson from Topeka who was able to eat a total of 14 jalapenos.
Earlier Tuesday, the Fiesta Mexicana kicked off with a ribbon cutting by this year's king and queen.
Tuesday night was also the first night for the famous food... which is all made by parishioners of the Our Lady of Guadalupe Church.
There are daily food specials until Saturday when the fiesta ends.
All proceeds from the event go to the Holy Family School.
