The State of Kansas today received four bids for approximately 64,000 square feet of the northwest corner of State Parking Lot #2, which is located at the southeast corner of the intersection of 10th Street and Topeka Boulevard in Topeka.
The bids were unsealed Friday afternoon in the Kansas Department of Administration's Office of Facilities and Procurement Management and ranged in price from $402,250 to $2,505,000. The Secretary of Administration will now review the bids and has the option to reject all of them if they are not deemed to be in the best interest of the State.
The Department of Administration designated the area in Lot #2 as surplus property in March. The determination came after reviewing all available free parking in the Capitol Complex. Interim Secretary of Administration Mark J. McGivern reiterated Friday that surface parking for State employees will remain free in the Capitol Complex and employees currently parking in Lot #2 will continue to hold those permits.
McGivern said his agency sought to balance the interests of State employees and Kansas taxpayers when making the surplus property decision.
"We have an abundance of parking within the Capitol Complex," said McGivern. "State employees will continue to have immediate free access to parking in the Complex, and local taxpayers will benefit from property going back on the tax rolls."
If McGivern approves one of the bids, it must still be approved by Governor Sam Brownback and the State Finance Council.
