Shawnee County District Attorney Chad Taylor discussed his final report on the investigation surrounding the Dec. 16 shooting deaths of Cpl. David Gogian and officer Jeff Atherly this morning.
The two were shot to death while checking possible drug activity outside the Dillons grocery on 1400 S.W. Huntoon.
Their killer, 22-year-old David Tiscareno, was shot and killed by law enforcement officers Dec. 17
Taylor says that Tiscareno acted alone, though three women were with him at the time. One woman was driver the car, another was sitting on the curb and the third woman was inside the Dillons. Investigators believe they had no idea what Tiscareno planned to do.
The shooting of the two officers took only a total of five seconds. A third TPD officer responded and fired shots at Tiscareno, the whole confrontation took only one minute. The name of the third TPD officer is not being released.
Taylor says that Gogian and Atherly followed protocol on the way they approached the vehicle Tiscareno was in, neither of them fired any shots.
After the shooting Tiscareno took off and went to a house at 306 SW Western. The people in the house were watching the local news and realized who the man was and called Topeka Police.
Topeka police responded and found Tiscareno and shot him where he later died at Stormont-vail Hospital.
