NEW YORK (AP) — President Barack Obama says the partial government shutdown and the debt ceiling fight was about more than Republicans seeking to undermine the health care law. He says it was about contrasting visions for the nation between the two political parties.
Obama says his Democratic Party has the better part of that argument.
The president made his remarks to Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee donors in Manhattan's Upper West side at the home of Karen Mehiel, a Democratic party fundraiser.
Among the approximately 50 guests were House Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi and the congressional committee's chairman, Rep. Steve Israel of New York. Tickets were $16,200 per person.
Obama says the budget showdown displayed Washington's dysfunction in a way the country has not seen in a long time.
