MIAMI (AP) — Eight boaters missing off the coast of Honduras are being rescued by the U.S. Coast Guard.
Coast Guard spokesman Gabe Somma says the 28-foot (8.5-meter) boat was spotted about 66 miles (105 kilometers) from the western edge of Roatan, Honduras, where it set sail on Saturday afternoon.
Somma says the boaters — five Hondurans, a Canadian and two Americans — are all alive. But he doesn’t know their conditions. Four boaters had been hoisted into a Coast Guard helicopter by noon Wednesday.
Somma says the search covered 2,740 square miles (7,100 sq. kilometers) after a family member of the U.S. citizens reported the boat missing. He says more information will be available later Wednesday.
The Honduran navy also assisted in the search.
