Emporia hosts its share of disc golf tournaments, but this one is different. The Professional Disc Golf Association picked Emporia, Kansas and Dynamic Discs to host the 2013 Amateur World Championships.
"It was just a group of us, and us as a company that decided that you know what? We're going to do this," Dynamic Discs owner Jeremy Rusco said. "We're going to put the bid in, and we were rewarded the world championships this year."
In the past the tournament visited places like New York, and Charlotte, North Carolina. This year the PDGA switched it up, picking a town of 25,000 to host the premier amateur disc golf event in the world.
"The hospitality has been unsurpassed," Cleveland Disc Golfer Mike Broda said. "I've been to four other cities, this has been by far the most hospitable. They're going to shut down main street for us, for the players party. You don't get that."
For Mitch Bonjour, he only has to travel an hour down the turnpike.
"I'd like to bring a trophy back to Topeka," Bonjour said. I think that'd be cool for Topeka to have a world champion. "My goal is to play Saturday, and that's the semis and the finals. If I can make it to Saturday then I've achieved my goal. If I don't win, well you're still having fun."
"Anybody can do it. Anybody can play," Broda said. "If you can snap a towel. You know when you snap a towel at your kids? You can throw a frisbee. "There's people out here that are 70 years old that are doing it, and seven years old. There's no restrictions."
"It's free," Rusco said. "It's easy and cheap to get started up. It's good fun activity. You don't have to be a super star. You can just be the average person, and get out there and play."
Part of what makes disc golf so fun is the people that you meet when you play the sport.
"Everywhere you go you meet somebody different and they're always great," Broda said. "It's a great bunch of people that does this and you can't beat that."
"You see in baseball when a guy makes it to first base, the guy smacks him on the butt," Bonjour said. "They're still after each other, but here we all just like to have a good time."
The semifinals and finals take place Saturday.
